Q: What kind of ribbon should I use on my cake?
Does anyone have experience with using ribbon on cake as a wrap around the base rather than a border? I'm using Creme Unlimited Ice n' Fill to ice my cake, and I'm worried about it staining the ribbon. I've seen it done before, I'm just not sure what kind of ribbon to use - satin, paper, etc. It's for my wedding cake. Thanks!

A: Most ribbon for wrapping cakes iced w/ butter cream has a plastic backing, so you don't get grease marks on the ribbon. The plastic is removable so you can remove it to make a bow. You can find it at cake decor stores. It's kind of HTF.

Q: How many yards of ribbon would I need to tie up a box that is 9x9x4?
I'm looking to wrap like a christmas gift, with the ribbon running on all 4 sides of the box (9x9x4) and be able to tie a riboon on the top. I need to have enough ribbon to make 100 gift boxes with.

A: You would need 88 inches per box to wrap ribbon on all sides. That does not include room to tie knots or make bows, so I would say about 100 inches per box. You would then multiply that by 100 for all of the boxes which is 10,000 inches. Divide that by twelve to get the number of feet. That is 833 and 1/3 feet. Round that to 834 (better to have more than less). There is about .33 yards in one foot, so you would multiply 834 by .33 to get 275.25 yards.

Q: How do I put ribbon trim on a fleece blanket?
I want to make a fleece blanket for my niece with purple trim on the edges. How do I sew it on and make it look nice? Do I need to hem the ribbon so it doesn't fray, or is there something I can use that is already prepared? The shiny ribbon around the edges of some baby blankets is basically what I want to put on my blanket, but I haven't done anything like this before.

Q: How do I wrap a ribbon around fondant?
I am making a three layer , square wedding cake. The bride just wants it to be plain white fondant (which I can do) with a ribbon around each layer. I have tried to attach the ribbon in the past, but it never stayed close enough to the fondant, and I couldn't figure out how to attach the ends.

A: Really easy...I'm a pastry chef.......... Just pull the ribbon snug without pulling too tight Fold one side under to cover raw edges and put over the other end. Secure with a pin that has a LARGE Pearl on the end (or something else having to do with the theme......) Make sure that SOMEONE knows to take this off before cutting the cake!

Q: How do you make those large fabric/ribbon picture frames?
I cannot remember what they are called, but they are essentially large pieces of wood covered in cushioning and fabric, and then ribbon crosses over it and at each cross of ribbon theres a button and you can slide photos/card/etc under the ribbon. How do you make those? What are they called? Any websites showing how?

A: like a pinup board? yes, I know what you mean. Buy a big piece of cork, like a pinup board. cover it in fabric (use a staple gun). position ribbons over it and just join the centres with pins which you can press into the cork. you don't need cushioning. Then just slide photos under the ribbon. Remember to make the ribbon tight or your cards and pictures will fall out

Q: How do I insert the ribbon into an old Underwood 5 typewriter?
I recently found an old typewriter in my garage and am attempting to start using it, though, I am unable to put the ribbon in properly. I have put it in so that when I type, letters do show up, but the ribbon does not move, and the ink eventually fades. If anyone could explain to me how to properly put it in there, that would be great.

A: Look for a little lever, probably on the right spool. It might be stuck on the reverse setting. This site has some possible problems that you can fix. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/5405/repair_quick.htm

Q: What is the awareness ribbon color for Laryngeal cancer?
I've been trying to find the awareness ribbon color for Laryngeal Cancer and have been unable to. I know that light purple tends to be the general Cancer awareness ribbon, but I am looking specifically for Laryngeal Cancer.

A: The only thing I could find was esophageal cancer, sorry. It's periwinkle.

Q: What is the ribbon that connects my old receiver to my cd player called?
I have an old stereo (1990s) and there is a 1.5" or so ribbon-type piece that connects the receiver component to the cd player component. It is screwed in on both ends. What is this called and where can I buy another? Thanks!

A: im pretty sure is called a ribbon

Q: What does a little ribbon thing mean on knitting charts?
I am making a twisted Bavarian knitting hat. It's a bunch of cable all the way around. They look like the ribbon things you put on cars for breast cancer or something.

A: Hi, in the one pattern* that I have that uses that symbol the symbol represents a stitch that you would knit through the back loop to create a twisted stitch. This may not be true for all patterns using this symbol. But it does make a lot of sense that it would mean to twist the stitch. * the pattern that I'm referring to is the Koolhaas hat from the Interweave Knits Holiday 2007 issue.

Q: What is the difference between a military ribbon and a military medal of the same type?
For example, there is a Good Conduct Ribbon and also a Good Conduct Medal. If a soldier is given a Good Conduct Ribbon as an award, does it also give him a Good Conduct Medal as a decoration?

A: They are earned the same way at the same time. When you earn the Good Conduct Medal,or any other medal, you get a smaller ribbon to wear on your uniform for non-ceremonial occasions. They are much more convenient. The Air Force also gives ribbons for purposes that other services give patches. One example is the AF Longevity Badge. With that ribbon and oak leaves that are added later, you show how long you have served. Other services wear patches,or hash marks, on their sleeve to show the same information. If you earn any medal or ribbon more than once, those oak leaf pins are added to signify multiple awards.

Q: How do I attach ribbon to the back of ceramic tile?
I am making a wall hanging from ceramic tiles. I want to attach a nice ribbon or a metal coil hanger type thing to the back of it. How do I attach it? I need something that will hold for years so it doesn't get ruined. Any suggestions? Thank you!

A: I assume you are not putting a wooden frame around your artwork but have laid the tiles onto some sort of back piece. A good glue with the ribbon might work, but I'd worry nevertheless. Use the glue and staples together. Or try screwing in tiny eye bolts if the backboard is wood, and attach picture wire to it. I often use WellBond glue found at Lowe's and Home Depot. If you use one of those metal hangars like are used to hang plates, you could put picture hangars in the wall and hang the metal hangar on them. That way you could still put on the ribbon as though the art piece was hanging from it but it wouldn't be bearing any weight.

Q: What does the throat cancer ribbon and the melanoma ribbon look like?
Im getting a tattoo in honor of my dad who had throat cancer and my mom who had melanoma. One ribbon is going to be on one shoulder and the other ribbon on the other shoulder. The ribbons will be ripped in the middle with a sparrow flying through the middle. They both survived and this is for them! So if anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated!!!

A: According to the "for the cure" site melanoma is a black ribbon. It doesn't list throat cancer. But it also doesn't list lung cancer, so it doesn't appear complete. The Trinity London site and the Pin People site also have black for melanoma, and "pearl" (opalescent?) for lung cancer. Purple is the color for cancer survivors, but would be more appropriate for your parents than for you. That tattoo is really a lovely idea... I'm sure you'll come up with whatever is just right for you, and no matter what it is, your parents should feel honored by the fact that you did it.

Q: How do I tie a ribbon around a favor box, without the ribbon making the box wobble?
I'm trying to tie a ribbon around a small favor box, but the bottom of the box won't sit right. It keeps wobbling. I know that there's a way to tie a ribbon around a box twice over without the ribbon sort of bunching up on the bottom of the box. I did it once about a year ago but I can't remember how. Help!!

A: i would just cut the ribbon a bit longer than it needs to be to be able to make a small tie. cut 2 pieces of ribbon slide each piece under the box and tie a knot on top of the box for both sides. bunch up the ribbon to make a bow and use the ties on top of the box to hold the bow in place. use some scotch tape to hold in place under the bow if you need to.

Q: Can someone help me find ribbon for my wedding cake?
I am looking for Dark Brown Ribbon about 1 1/2" thick with rhinestone edging. I want it on my wedding cake and I can't find it anywhere! If someone knows where I can find this please help me!

A: You may have to find the ribbon you want, then attach a rhinestone chain by hand stitching. If you aren't wanting a great length of it, this may work. I wasn't able to find anything online other than white and silver. I bet you and your girlfriends could whip-stitch the rhinestones on fairly quickly. You can get the rhinestone chains at most fabric or craft stores. Good luck.
