Q: painting???
my mum is painting the passage and the walls have been platered so there smooth but the thing is its showing patches everywhere and it dont look right? its not cuz its drying cuz u can still see it next day!! is there a special way to paint or a specific paint brush or roller!
Many Thanks
its already been base coated first and the plaster is definatly dry!!!!!
A: There is no primer for new plaster. So trained decorators will water down the first coat of emulsion by as much as 50 percent to thin the paint so it soaks in and gets some kind of grab on the wall. Sometimes plasterers over trowel the finish and it is so dense and shiny nothing soaks in and grips it so a specialist primer like Bullseye 123 can be used on bare surfaces where the paint has peeled off.
(Contrary to the advice previous given you do not 'seal' new plaster with anything. You want a thinned emulsion that soaks in and nothing that lays on the surface. )
The finish skim coat of plaster will only have been 5 or so millimetres thick and will have dried out after a few days. However, if there are places where they first used sand and cement render then those areas will be drying for many months and an emulsion with no vinyl content should have been used to facilitate the drying process.
So you either have patches that are drying out or stains which need sealing back.
Q: What paint products are best when painting cupboards?
I've pretty much decided on painting over my seriously faded kitchen cupboards with a warm white paint (oak and oak panelling). I know that I have to sand them really well and then wipe with tsp. But, can you recommend a specific paint brand that you've had experience painting cupboards with?
A: You need a paint that is non-blocking, which is a term for paint that resists sticking to other objects. In California, Arizona and Nevada, one of the best quality paint brands is Dunn Edwards. They recommend their Permasheen for cupboards, which is an acrylic semi-gloss paint:

Some people, including myself, prefer an oil-based paint because if it is properly applied, the surface will be smoother and harder than what you can get with an acrylic paint. Dunn Edwards' Aristoglo is an alkyd semi-gloss paint that is suitable for cupboards:

The disadvantage of an alkyd paint is that cleanup requires paint thinner, whereas an acrylic paint can be cleaned up with soap and water. Also, alkyd white paints tend to yellow more than acrylic white paints. For the non-professional, acrylic paints are generally recommended.
If you are in another part of the country, look for a paint with similar characteristics. Don't use a cheap paint for cupboards because you may find that blocking will be a problem.
Q: When painting with acrylic paints, what should I start painting first?
I've searched all over the internet for an answer to this but all I keep coming up with are techniques on how to mix colors for acrylic painting! I really want to know how I should start painting my image. It's a portrait of one of my closest friends. Should I paint the background of the canvas board first or her face or her hair?? Please help!
A: Paint in layers. Background basic shading first. then work your way to more detail. Keep your paint wet. I use an extender gel to blend easier.
Q: Do I have to paint a wall white before painting it?
Do I have to paint a wall white before painting it?
My wall is regular violet/purple now, and i want to paint it regular green. Should I paint my wall white first before painting it green, or should i just paint with green right away.
Thanks.
A: You have to use a primer on it first and primer comes in colors so you can pick one close to your final color. If you do not use primer on such an intense color before painting you could have some bleed through and definitely not achieve the true color you want.
Q: painting one wall red, what color should i paint the 3 other ones?
hi well im painting one wall red in one of my rooms. it will be a dark red. the room is on the small side and has little natural light. i was thinking of painting the rest of the walls a very light pink. would that match? what are your suggestions? keep in my the room is dark, so i need a light color. thanx in advance!
it is a bedroom.
A: Depends on what the accent color of your stuff is. But If you just want to do a regular color to off set the dark wall , i would do a very light Beige , or even a nice white , like soft white or even a cream. Good Luck.
Q: Tips on painting my room and others?
I am painting a lot of stuff in my room.
But most importantly, I am going to paint my entire bed frame as well. I just wanted to paint it entirely black, the bed that is. Can I use any paint?
What would you recommend?
WOODEN FRAME
NEED TO PAINT IT ALL BLACK
THANKS!
A: depends on the bed frame, you can use a flat or a gloss, dont use a oil bas or latex it will take forever to dry plus it will look very bad
Q: What type of paint should i use below the water line when painting a concrete birdbath?
I am painting the bowl of a birdbath. The paint in the bowl will be under water on a regular basis. What type of paint will tolerate being under water for extended periods of time?
A: Ask this question in construction and remodeling section not in arts section.
Q: When painting a bathroom, do you have to use a special paint to withstand heat and humidity?
I am going to be painting my bathroom this weekend. I was wondering if I can use the regular matte finish in there or do I have to get a little gloss so it can stand the heat. I never close my bathroom door because it's inside my bedroom so I just close my bedroom door. It never gets THAT steamy in the bathroom because of that. I am just wondering though. Also, do you think it's nice to also paint the ceiling the same color as the walls? Or should I leave it white? I am doing a light pinkish color.
A: Don't use flat paint, I't grows mold really easy. I used to own a painting busines. We always used semi gloss or gloss paint for the bathrooms. I saw some one else recomend Behr paints from Home dept, My advice is not to use it. I found it required a lot of extra prep and even mutiple coats to get good coverage. I like the look of the bathroom walls and ceiling the same color.Good luck
Q: When painting how do you avoid it being sticky afterward?
I'd like to spray-paint a piece of furniture, but I've had problems in the past with painting. I tried painting an end table once, and also some shelves, and both times the paint dried sort of sticky. Even months after it was painted it was still sticky. I'm not sure if it's because I live in a humid area (Houston) or if I'm just using cheap paint. But does anyone know how to avoid the sticky feel after painting?
A: First of all, did you prime the piece, or just paint it? If you didn't prime, then whatever finish was on the piece will be interacting directly with the paint, which can cause stickiness. Priming the piece creates a barrier between the old finish and the new one, preventing that interaction. There are some paints which have primer in them or which double as primer, look at the label before you buy to find one.
Second, try to pick days that aren't as humid (hard, I know!) and use a fan on the piece while it's drying. Use a good quality paint, not the super-cheap stuff, and that should take care of it. I've had pretty good results with Krylon.
As far as getting rid of the sticky feel on the ones you've already painted, your best bet would be to strip them, prime, and repaint with good paint. Good luck!
Q: What paint should I use for a metal headboard and footboard for detail painting?
We recently bought a glossy red metal frame bed for my daughter. Up til now she was in a hand-me-down racecar bed. I would love to make it extra girlie by painting flowers on it, but I'm not sure what paint to use or how to prep the surface. Please help?
A: use acryilic
Q: Is it possible to remove acrylic paint from canvas without damaging the rest of the painting?
My husband is painting a picture for his parents for Christmas and has messed up a small part of the painting, He's tried painting over it, but can't get the right shade anymore. He's using acrylics. Is there a way to remove that small area of paint, without damaging the rest of the painting so that he can redo it?
A: I teach acrylic painting lessons and use this medium daily. Acrylic has a plastic blend and when it dries it's not coming off. Keep working on matching the colors where the problem area is. Just layer the colors little by little...be patient it will come together. I just finished a painting of a pair of beagles...the owner of the painting wanted me to change the color of the hair coat on one of the dogs. Which meant I had to basically start my layering all over from scratch. So I did this and worked on it for a few hours and it came together and the owner was happy with the results.
Q: Any tips on good wall Painting ?
I will be painting my basement apartment and I would like to get as much painting tips as possible. First, what paint to get, where I could get good quality paint etc. The colors already on the wall are white and a light green. I wish to color it a deep red color and gray. Just wanted to know what I will need to get started and what paint will last.
Thanks for any tips.
A: Eggshell is great. Make sure you tape everything off. Put drop cloths down in case you spill and start at the top and work your way down. Also if you're using a textured brush, I'd start with a regular brush near the defecate areas, doors, outlets, etc. - that way after you go over with the textured brush, it won't look like an afterthought.
Q: How long after painting walls is it safe to live in the apartment?
hi. I am moving into an apartment which is unfurnished so i'll have to paint the walls. I heard that if i paint the walls i can't live there for like two months because there is methanol which comes off the paint and is really bad for your health. So my question is, how long after painting walls is it safe to live in that place? thanks.
A: You can move in almost immediately after the paint is dry. There's really no time frame. Just leave the window open and the room will air out as you paint. You will smell fresh paint for approx.. a couple weeks after your done painting.
Q: Need painting advice for roughly textured walls. How do I get coverage in all the dimples, etc?
I've found that cheap bruhes work better than the Purdy because the roughness separates the bristles. That's why I was considering a paint sprayer because I have spent a lot on different brushes and rollers. I'm using a lot more paint trying to get coverage in all of the dimpled areas also. Would love advice on how to tackle my painting project!
A: Get a roller with a 3/4 inch nap, or a lambs wool roller. You might still need to dab some paint in the deeper dimples, but these should do the job.
Q: When painting a room, would you leave the ceiling white, or painted the room color?
We are painting one room a cappichino (sp) color and the other room a light green. I think painting the ceiling would close it in, but just checking.
A: I am a painting contractor that specializes in the luxury home market . All the homes I work on are sone by designers and I can tell you the most popular thing for ceilings right now is to use the same color that is on the wall for the ceiling only 50 to 75 lighter than the shade that is on the wall.
